There are nearly a hundred thousand pathologists in full time employment in the United States alone, making it a crucial part of the education program, as well as a much needed therapy for adults. Although the regulations for speech pathologists vary from state to state, there have now been certain minimum requirements imposed by the Federal Government. A graduate degree and a year working under a supervisor are necessary before you can set up practice on your own. It generally takes three years of study before you can even reach this level.
