When I was just barely in my twenties, I rented a small house in San Francisco, just two blocks from the beach. The house was modest and plain, but had a small front yard with little else growing besides an abundance of cineraria, a lovely perennial with purple-magenta daisy like flowers. My house had a porch and two windows facing the street, under which were a couple of dilapidated window box planters, with nothing inside of them, not even dirt. I found my new house to be charming. Not having enjoyed the luxury of a garden in previous third-story Victorian apartments, I was delighted at this diamond in the rough. It just needed a little TLC to make it come alive.

For many people it is their favourite leisure activity for others it is just a hassle – gardening. Having a nice garden with lots of flowers, bushes, trees and a nice lawn is hard work that you still have to do if you want to have a nice looking garden that you can use in summer.
In order to have a beautiful garden it is advisable to draw a plan of the garden and make some plans as to where different plants, a garden shack or a seating area will should be located. For planning a garden you should always take into consideration who will use the garden in the future. Will it rather be children who want to have lots of space and might even enjoy having a swing? Or is it rather only you and your husband who will like to welcome guests in the garden for a tea time or a summer dinner?
Your choices will largely depend on these factors. The next step is then to find suitable plants and plant them according to your plan. Some of you might like to have a vegetable or herb patch too. Vegetable patches should always be in a sunny, open spot to ensure that the plants grow properly. To make a good vegetable bed you will also need compost to make the soil as fertile as possible. Finally when planting the vegetables you should take into considerations that not all plants grow well next to each other. You best consult a gardening book to find about that.
You should see gardening as a hobby rather than a hassle. If you put some time and effort into the planning process you will end up with a lovely garden that conforms to your needs afterwards.

When planning your garden design make the flower-beds as broad as possible. When choosing plants for your flower beds, remember to consider how much space you have before you go about and buy. If you only have six inches of planting space, you don’t want plants that will spread out over a two-foot space. In this case, you may want to buy some plants for your flower beds that will grow up instead of out, and then get some greens that will fill out the space below. If you get spreading plants, you are going to spend a lot of time trimming down your flower beds.
